Buyer's Guide
Which Golf App Is Right for You?
We build three focused golf apps — each designed for a different job on the course or off it. Here's how to figure out which one (or combination) fits the way you play.
The Short Answer
Most golfers need one or two of these apps, not all three. The key is knowing what each one does:
- ForeFun Golf GPS — GPS yardages, shot tracking, and green maps while you're actually playing a round.
- Golf Handicap Tracker & Scores — Posting scores and calculating a WHS-style Handicap Index for individual golfers.
- Golf League Handicap Tracker — Managing handicaps, tee sheets, and published scores for a group of up to 10 players.
They don't overlap. ForeFun is an on-course tool; the two handicap apps are for recording and calculating after the round. Many golfers use ForeFun alongside one of the handicap apps together.

ForeFun Golf GPS — For the Golfer on the Course
ForeFun Golf GPS is the app you open on the first tee. It uses your device's GPS to show real-time yardages to the front, center, and back of the green — automatically updated as you walk down the fairway. Unlike a simple distance-to-flag rangefinder, ForeFun adjusts yardages based on your angle of approach, so if you're playing a dogleg or coming in from the side, the distances reflect that geometry.
The free tier includes full GPS course maps for 350,000+ courses worldwide. A Premium subscription ($34.99/year) adds AI green contour maps, Play Like Adjustments for uphill or downhill shots, shot dispersion tracking, and 24 performance charts so you can see which clubs you're hitting where.
Best for: Any golfer who wants accurate, real-time yardages during a round — from weekenders who just want to know how far they are from the pin, to more serious players analyzing shot patterns and approach distances over a season.
- Angle-aware front, center & back yardages
- 350,000+ course maps with bunkers and hazards
- AI green contour overlays (Premium)
- Play Like Adjustments for elevation + wind (Premium)
- Full Apple Watch app — no phone needed on the course
- Shot tracking and 24 performance analytics charts
- Calligraphy-style digital scorecard
- Available on iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, Apple Vision Pro, and Android
Golf Handicap Tracker & Scores — For the Individual Golfer
Golf Handicap Tracker & Scores is a personal score-posting and handicap calculation app designed for recreational golfers who want a WHS-style Handicap Index without joining a club or paying USGA membership fees. You post your scores after a round, and the app applies the World Handicap System formula — using your best differentials from recent rounds — to calculate your index.
This is entirely separate from ForeFun Golf GPS. ForeFun handles yardages during the round; Golf Handicap Tracker & Scores handles the score record and handicap calculation after you finish. Many golfers use both together: ForeFun to play smarter, Golf Handicap Tracker & Scores to maintain an honest handicap over the season.
Best for: Individual golfers who play casually or semi-seriously and want to track a personal Handicap Index over time — without needing to belong to a formal club or association. Also ideal for anyone switching phones who wants reliable cloud backup and restore of their full score history.
- WHS-style Handicap Index calculation
- Post 18-hole and 9-hole scores (9-hole rounds automatically combined)
- Course Handicap and Maximum Score lookup before a round
- Score history with full handicap trend chart
- Friends comparison and group handicap view
- Cloud backup — transfer your full history to a new device
- 300,000+ course database with manual add-course option
- Available on iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Vision Pro, and Android
Golf League Handicap Tracker — For the League Commissioner
Golf League Handicap Tracker is built for whoever runs the group — the commissioner, the organizer, the person who sends out the tee times and tracks who owes whom strokes. It manages WHS-style handicap calculations for up to 10 players at once, generates printable tee sheets, and lets you publish and share scores with members via email so everyone can see the updated standings on their own phone.
Unlike Golf Handicap Tracker & Scores (which each golfer uses individually), Golf League Handicap Tracker is a single-device hub app. The commissioner manages everyone's data from one iPhone or iPad. Members don't need to download anything — they receive a score summary email they can view in ForeFun Golf GPS using a secure token link.
Best for: Casual leagues, regular weekend groups, work outings, and any organized group that needs fair WHS-style strokes without the overhead of a formal club handicap system. If your group has 3–10 players who play together regularly, this is the right tool.
- Unlimited golfers with Group Handicap membership
- WHS-style and Short League handicap modes
- Tee sheet PDF builder for print or share
- Publish & share scores to members by email
- Custom handicap allowances per format
- Cloud backup and full data restore
- 300,000+ course database
- Available on iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple Vision Pro (iOS only)
Common App Combinations
Because these apps handle different jobs, many golfers use two of them together:
- ForeFun + Golf Handicap Tracker & Scores — The most common combination. Use ForeFun during the round for GPS yardages, then post your score in Golf Handicap Tracker & Scores after. Your Handicap Index updates automatically.
- Golf League Handicap Tracker + ForeFun — The league commissioner manages group handicaps in Golf League Handicap Tracker; individual players use ForeFun for GPS on the course. Members can view published scores via ForeFun's secure token link.
- All three — If you're both a league organizer and an individual player who wants personal score history independent of the league, you might use all three. Golf League for group management, Golf Handicap Tracker & Scores for your personal index, and ForeFun for GPS on every round.
